What type of fabric should I use for dining chairs?

I have 3 boys who are very messy. They tend to get something (ketchup, juice, anything that typically stains) on their seats at every meal. I want to reupholster my dining room chairs with something that is easy to clean and will last a few years with daily use. I have no idea what kind of fabric to use. Please help. Thanks.

Another thing you could do is keep a towel over whatever you decide on. A little extra protection never hurt.
Any kind of denim, twill, or canvas will be your best bet. Scotchgard it really well before putting it on and you should be able to just wipe anything off it. Keep in mind that patterns show stains less than solids, so if you can find a print that you like, that would help even more.
I would not recommend the cotton fabrics as in the other answer. I would use upholstery fabric in polyester, nylon or leather grain plastic.
I think you should think about upholstering in whatever you like/scotch guard well, and make covers for everyday use till the boys get older. This way you and your adult company can enjoy grown up chairs and your boys/family can enjoy something fun and removable everyday…make a couple of covers to change when needed. Easy fix for everybody.
