I think it is a cotton fabric.
The seat cannot be removed or washed in the washer.

First, check the fabric on the underside of the stool to make sure it’s color fast. That means that the fabric won’t bleed color when it’s gotten wet. If the color bleeds, you’re pretty much done. You’re going to have to recover them.
I’d try Dawn dish detergent and warm water. Work up some suds and sponge the area well. Let it soak a bit and go back and wipe/sponge it off with warm, clean water. If you have a carpet shampoo machine with the upholstery attachment, that would work also.
Simple Green is another great cleaner on grease. It’s non-toxic and biodegradable. Available in a lot of grocery, hardware, automotive and discount stores. Read and follow the label directions as it is a concentrated cleaner and a little goes a long way. A gallon makes 64 gallons of all purpose cleaner but you can buy it in a smaller bottle in a lot of stores.
Spot wash with a good detergent on a soft cloth; rinse well and start the drying process by putting down a folded dry towel and sitting on it for several minutes.
Or use a powder or aerosol spotter like Janie stick or Sprayway Spot Lifter:

Consider a Scotchgard or similar stain repellent treatment when you’ve got the spot out.
