We are remodeling our kitchen without the typical cabinetry. Can and should this be done?
I asked this question 2 days ago and was very happy with the answers and I want more. My kitchen will contain the following, including a dining room table. The kitchen/dining room is open and 15×25.
1.bakers rack for microwave, etc
2. three 4-drawer tables to go in front of three windows
3. special shelves for dishes
4. two solid wood 2′x2′ islands for work stations, they have two shelves on bottom
5. traditional sink base
6. special cabinet for oils, vinigars, spices, etc, coffee station will go on top
7. fridge
8. pantry with doors for food
9. big 3′x5′ island with shelves, cupboard space, drawers, and serves as breakfast bar with 2 stools
No dishwasher, I prefer to hand wash. The walls will be covered with art and my great mug collection. All these pieces are un-finished and will be stained to match.
My husband would prefer traditional, but I am creative and think so far out of the box, I don’t even remember the box!! Thanks!

This concept is really interesting – It sounds very much like old French or Italian kitchens – which were portable. I would love to have one just like it, but I would add baskets, including hanging baskets for ripening fruit.
If you are staying put for many years, you will be very happy with this perfectly tailored to your needs kitchen. However, because such a kitchen is so specialized, it might actually devalue your home. So, as long as you realize that when it comes time to sell this house, you might have to install a fitted kitchen, all will be well. This scenario does have an advantage – your perfect kitchen can go to your new house! Good luck- I am envious!
I’m out with you. I don’t know about the mug collection, maybe I’d have to see it. All else sounds great. My idea is to have some fairly typical lowers, but no upper cupboards. I like the idea of walls. Then, a floor to ceiling pantry over on the side to have storage in the kitchen, and a walk-in pantry for bigger stuff and shelves for large stuff like crock pot and such. I’d say GO FOR IT, but also, you need to work it out with hubby.
Ya better get some cabinets for the kitchen! If you ever try to sell the place the lack of cabinets will be enough to kill the sale. Why not make a special place for your mugs? Why not frame the art in a tasteful way for display? I know that I would NEVER buy a house without kitchen cabinets unless the seller agreed to fund the cost to purchase them and have them installed.
You say "we are remodeling."
Then you say, "my husband would prefer traditional."
"But i am creative, and think so far out of the box."
I think you still have that box, and it’s made of pine.
I am sure your husband has "his" collection,
That needs "some" of that space. <}:-})
