How to keep an adult dog off furniture?
Just adopted an adut dog a week ago. His previous owners used to let him on the furniture, we put chairs on the couch and the chaise so it blocks him from going up. Any advice on keeping him off the furniture? One day I had come home and he was on the furniture with the chair that was supposed to block him from going up. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. The dog is six years old. Thanks!

Sprinkle the couch with pepper. My dog really doesn’t like the taste of really peppery foods, and I think it doesn’t like the smell either. I know this seems kind of gross but after a while the dog will avoid the smell and stop going on the furniture and then you can stop putting pepper on it.
ooo try putting tin foil on the furniture while your gone. Most dogs wont go on the furniture if theres tin foil on it.
you have to train it or
get some to train her
give her treat when she does something right.
she’ll learn
cage her up when you don’t want her out on the coach
It may sound stupid and may be more of a cat think, but the spray bottle always works….. Every time the gets on the furniture just spray the dog….
He can be retrained not to go on your furniture but you aren’t going to be successful if he has run of the house when home alone. Until he has been retrained, you cannot trust him to stay off the furniture in your absence.
Take him to obedience classes or hire a trainer to teach the dog ‘off’, ‘down’ and ’stay’. Be consistant in telling him off. Keep a leash on him when you are home and if he attempts to get on the furniture, gently guide him off of it and praise him.
Keep the dog outside! It’s your house you make the rules. You have to show you are the boss and what is not acceptable.
It’s nigh impossible to teach an old dog new tricks.
I totally agree with chloe. Instead of putting it in a cage when you’re not around let it outside where it can play in the yard. Locking one up is so sad….they’re not meant to be caged.
No matter what they call it a crate IS a cage.
I would say just keep letting the dog know it is not ok, you are going to have to be patient and keep reiterating that this is not acceptable.
Mouse traps covered in newspaper when you are not home. They will go off when he gets on the couch and startle him but shouldn’t hurt him if they are under the paper. Squirt bottle full of water when you are home. Spray him every time he jumps up. If that doesn’t work keep dragging him off the couch and praising him for being off the couch. If he’s a smart dog….you can teach him new tricks.
I USE TIN FOIL! IT WORKS! IF YOU DON’T WANT TO USE TIN FOIL- I HAD ONE TRAINER TELL ME TO SET MOUSE TRAPS AND PUT THEM ON THE FURNITURE. THEY JUMP UP AND THE TRAPS SNAP. SHE SAID THAT IN HER 10 YEARS AS A TRAINER NO DOG HAD EVER BEEN CAUGHT IN THE TRAP. GOOD LUCK
