Do you believe Obama understands the following hypothetical situation?
Do you ?
Bar Stool Economics
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to 0. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay .
The sixth would pay .
The seventh would pay .
The eighth would pay .
The ninth would pay .
The tenth man (the richest) would pay .
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good customers, he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by . Drinks for the ten now cost just .
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes, so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men – the paying customers? How could they divide the windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that divided by six is .33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings)
The sixth now paid instead of (33%savings).
The seventh now pay instead of (28%savings).
The eighth now paid instead of (25% savings).
The ninth now paid instead of (22% savings).
The tenth now paid instead of (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant the men began to compare their savings.
‘I only got a dollar out of the ,’declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,’ but he got !’
‘Yeah, that’s right,’ exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’
‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’
‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

You get a star. A simple explanation and probably over most of the people in this forums head. Thanks for sharing.
i not bothering to read all that but at obama and understand im guessing…
no
maybe your profesor should run for office hmmm I thought not
he must make more than warren buffet
hmm guess not
nu uh
Yeah he probably does… and I bet McCain’s head would be reeling from it.
OBAMA 08!!!
Do you believe Mccain understand all this that you wrote
sorry i didn’t read the whole thing
Of course Obama understands it – what’s more he is capable of making his own point rather than cutting and pasting an old and ridiculous analogy and then falsely crediting it to a renowned economist to give it the credibility it so painfully lacks.

I believe Obama has better things to do than read hypothetical fact patterns on Y!A.
The rich have been paying more of the tax burden before Obama declared he would run for president. Obama will just not stop the trend.
I don’t think he would have gotten past the second sentence. To funny you have stumped all the OBAMA fans here. Read there answers. TO FUNNY. Hypothesis is proven.
This is the most intelligent thing I have read this entire election season. God Bless You Professor, for sharing some good old-fashioned common sense!
You sir are too smart for me, I do understand that Obama is no good..
i can’t believe i read all that.. but i concur..
obama DOES NOT understand this situation.. whatsoever
Obama is not fooled by hypothetical examples that do not play out the complexities of real life.
So someone who has a $100 bar tab pays $59 in taxes….that makes no sense. Stop making crap up to prove your false point
It’s a good one, but Obama supporters do not listen to reason. They just have an orgasm every time they see their leader on TV and that’s enough for them.
This is true.
Lol, way to oversimplify a complex subject.
This is an old analogy that you simply added false credentials to at the end. You are not a doctor, you did not make this up, and you’re not a professor of economics. You are a tool, falsely claiming this is your analogy to create a false impression of Obama’s tax plan. This analogy of beer money does not even come CLOSE to resembling Obama’s tax plan, and is therefore completely irrelevent. This does not belong in the "elections" section of politics on Yahoo, it belongs in a beer section.
and your point is? We are not talking about beer we are talking about our lives. Obama would not implement something that he is not sure will work. Can you show me a sample if we use Mccains tax plan? Lets just pray we will all get a fair shake. I think a fair plan , but sufficient plan is needed.
If he did read it and understood it he’d blame the 10th for not pulling his fair share of the load because he didn’t come back the next day.
And there was two in the bed and the little said "roll over, roll over" and they all rolled over and one rolled out. And the little said "bump da dee da da–good night !!
Then let them go. Just like it is not their fault for being wealthy it is not poor peoples fault for being poor. If I had a choice I would be rich that can’t happen for everybody. If the wealthy love America then what’s a 3% tax increase to improve this country. I wish that a 3% tax increase was my only financial problem. Some of the wealthy do the dumbest things with money, I mean who needs a $10,000 purse
I have seen this many times and I love it! What don’t people get – if you are the guy getting the free beer – enjoy your beer and the people who provide it for you.
If you think BO would buy you a beer out his pocket you are just nutty. Oh he will give you a beer but out of someone else’s pocket.
Thanks. I saw that before. This time I understood it.
Democrats for McCain. It has nothing, however to do with economics. Just a bunch of angry Democrats who are tired of the Obama camp lying and cheating.

This probably would go over the head of 98% of our politicians, yet somehow we leave these idiots in charge.
That has to be the best analogy I have ever heard WOW.
Thank you for that brilliance’s.
and NO he just don’t get it.
I loved it, and it was put it in a way that everyone should be able to understand. Unfortunately, those that support Obama won’t read it since they will see it as an insult. It wasn’t, but that’s how they will see it, instead of a rational disscussion.
Are we talking about Joe Six Pack here? Man 1-5 complain when they got to drink free beer? Wow, that’s messed up.
Edit: Moral of the story- Drink with rich friends.
Thanks for posting this Larry. I enjoyed seeing it again.
I do think Obama can quite readily grasp this hypothetical problem.
Since he graduated Harvard Law school – he must have some smarts.
He will have enough real problems that he may not have time for this
Too bad we didn’t have more brighful proffesors like yourself at Arizona State. Our University is full of department head morons that paraded the 700B bailout plan all over the media…
The bottom half shouldn’t be in the bar in the first place. I see capitalism more like a poker game. When the chips are concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, the other guys could only stay in the game by borrowing. When their credit ran out the game ended. This is something FDR’s Fed Chairman Marriner S. Eccles said. Yes I can see your point and I hope you see mine. The man who makes the most money is fueled by greed. How is it that there are men who make a lot of money and are willing to give more than other people who are wealthy. It is greed! You also forgot to talk about all of the tax breaks that are available to the wealthy.
I’m no economist, but that analogy requires a considerable drop in the cost of the product, which is something we middle-class Americans are not enjoying. Everyone knows the tax system is unfair, and maybe so at both ends. However, the rich enjoy lots of loopholes and deductions which are formulated for their benefit that middle-income people do not have. This is unfair, percentage wise, and everybody knows it! If a CEO makes about 500% more than the workers at the bottom, is he paying anywhere near 500% more in taxes? We need a tax reform…not another reduction for the rich!
Really, you must be joking. That is not the case at all, seriously! The federal government even taxes Unemployment Benefits (max = ~$ 200.00 per week). The unemployed are truly impoverished because no one can possibly live off of that amount of money. Your comments that the poor don’t pay anything is just untrue.
Consider all the people being laid off before Obama becomes president. You can blame Bush for the environment of deregulation and its negative effects on the economy. As president, he could have taken action against deregulation.
Barack Obama is neither attacking small businesses nor he penalizing the rich. You can not blame Obama for corporate greed. We have so much evidence of it right now: forced $700 Billion Bailout on the American people, paying extremely low wages that do not rise as the cost of living increases, Leaving for Foreign Countries so they don’t have to pay taxes while selling their products in the United States. They are basically raping the US economy by not paying their fair amount in taxes among other crimes, but earning money off of the American people.
Corporate greed is insatiable! They couldn’t even be respectful enough to the American people to better manage their spending (AIG $400,000 Spa Weekend), and I am sure there are many other untold stories. I think that was just to mock the American people.
Also, this is a very complex issue that can not be settled in the bar scenario. The fact is the poor and middle class are heavily taxed, while the rich enjoy tax breaks.
This is not simply the amount of taxes paid, but the amount that is undue burden or causes the payer to have a reduced standard of living. For example, due to taxes I can either pay my rent and feed my family, but I can’t do both.
And with the GOP wanting to privatize everything, the poor and middle class will not even be able to pay for their children’s education and they won’t be able to retire. This economy and the greedy corporations are dependent on low wage workers and there should be compensation for their trouble somewhere. Or people should just be paid live-able wages. I don’t believe that anyone should be taxed to the point in which they experience undue burden.
I can proudly support Obama because he eloquently informed McCain that he does not mind paying the taxes! McCain is selfish and just interested in supporting the rich in this country who are only rich due to hardworking Americans who spend their hard earned money with them.
