are kitchen bars outdated?
just bought a home and the kitchen has a bar that comes out from the wall and it sits in between the kitchen and the dining room. I like it because it provides extra cabinet space and would be a nice place to put some bar stools. A friend of mine keeps telling me bars like that are outdated and it needs to be ripped out and replaced with an island. I like the bar myself, but my question to everyone is, are they really that out of style??

If you like it, keep it. The only difference between a bar and an island is whether it is connected to the wall. From what I can tell, trendy kitchen designs have more to do with materials (mosaic tile, granite counters, stainless steel appliances, etc). But to me, island vs. bar has less to do with trends and more to do with the layout of your house. I think islands are well suited to very large kitchens, but in smaller kitchens a bar makes more sense.
Anyway, along with your personal preferences, you have to consider the cost of tearing out the bar and adding an island, which I’m sure is quite expensive, and may not add that much value to your home.
if you like it keep it tell your friend unless he is paying the mortgage mind his own business
I just remodeled my kitchen and dining area about a year ago and actually had a bar put in. I needed the cabinet space and it is a great place to sit and share a cup of coffee. In fact, when I think about it, I cannot recall being in anyone’s home in the past year that did not have a kitchen bar. Sounds to me like maybe your friend just does not like it. You like it, It provides a service for you, It is YOUR home. Keep it!
I like my bar. it breaks up the room so it looks like I have a seperated kitchen and dinning room even thou it’s really just one room. I say keep your bar if you like it.
Homes are like clothing, if it looks good on you, its fine. If its modern and makes you look strange, don’t wear it. The same is with your home, if it works for you then keep it. Let them worry about their home. Those bars are double workers, they have several purposes and both are great. Storage and a place to have breakfast, and to sit extra guest.
Maybe the style is a little old, but they are not outdated. So enjoy your bar and tell your friend to worry about her house.
